Leeds 'excited' as Marvel and Disney Plus to close several city centre roads for filming this weekend

Several roads in Leeds city centre will be temporarily closed this weekend as Disney+ comes into town to film with big stars - but most residents were completely unaware it was happening.

Grass Fed Productions are leading filming of the new as yet unnamed project, which is rumoured to be a Marvel TV show featuring Hollywood stars Samuel L Jackson and Ben Mendehlson.

To see what Leeds residents thought about Leeds potentially seeing some huge actors come to town LeedsLive headed into the city centre.

Sisters Tanya and Laura hadn't heard anything about the filming, but on hearing the rumours, said their sons would be excited.

Tanya told LeedsLive: "We had no idea it was happening at all. But I like Samuel L Jackson.

"Our sons are both seven years old, and if we sit down to watch a movie with them it's often got him in. Our kids like Marvel and Disney, they'd definitely be excited for it to come to Leeds."

Laura added: "There's always something happening in Leeds isn't there? My son absolutely loves Marvel, so maybe we'll come down for a look at the weekend."

Leeds resident Mick was enjoying a break in City Square when LeedsLive caught up with him.

He said: "I hadn't heard anything about it, but them filming here and closing roads won't bother me.

"But I think it's nice - it'll give Leeds people something to watch and be able to see their city on screen.

"Marvel and Disney aren't really my cup of tea but when I see my grandkids they always ask for their movies and TV shows to be on - they'll like it.

"I'm not really bothered about actors coming here but they probably would be."

There have also been as yet unconfirmed reports the series could star Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Game of Thrones's Emilia Clarke.

Similarly, Stephanie told LeedsLive the filming and road closures were complete news to her.

"I used to live in France," she said.

"You get quite used to film crews being around there so it doesn't really faze me in any way. I suppose it's quite big for Leeds, though obviously we've had Peaky Blinders and things like that come film here before."

While it seems many wider Leeds residents were unaware, residents and businesses on the roads affected by the filming and closures have been notified.

Greek Street, Alexander Street, Russell Street, Bond Court and the Gusto Alleyway will be affected by the closures. The main filming is taking place on Sunday, January 23 - but there will be some preparation over the previous two days.

Most of the businesses, however, aren't too worried about the filming impacting customers.

Blackhouse Grill on the Square backs on to Bond Court, where the main filming will be taking place, but manager Matthew said they will still be able to bring in customers through their main entrance on East Parade.

"We've not really had to make many adjustments," he said.

"They have booked out our conservatory on the Monday after the filming, but we don't really know much more yet.

"I'm interested to see what's going on when they come down. They let us know about a month ago so we've had lots of notice."

On Greek Street, Brian, general manager of Gusto Italian, said they believed they would still have pedestrian access to the restaurant throughout the filming period.

He told LeedsLive: "It's not going to have much of an effect on us we don't think. They're filming mostly in the alleyway next to us and Bond Court.

"It'll be something a bit different for a change."
