Leeds city centre bar Belgrave cancels football World Cup screenings over Qatar human rights

Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen has cancelled this year's football World Cup screenings due to the ongoing controversy surrounding the event and the LGBTQ+ community.

The popular city centre bar, in Cross Belgrave Street, is usually packed during peak hours and was expected to be busy while England play. However, a venue spokesperson says they are "committed" to ensure their venue supports all communities.

The bar has been applauded for "prioritising morals over profit". The owners' decision comes as controversy continues to surround the World Cup being hosted in Qatar - where homosexuality is illegal and same-sex relationships can be punishable by the death sentence.

Qatar World Cup ambassador Khalid Salman sparked controversy when it emerged he had referred to homosexuality as "damage in the mind". The former Qatar international's comments were called "harmful and unacceptable" by Human Rights Watch.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Belgrave said: "After some further thought and discussion, we've decided to cancel all screenings of the upcoming World Cup at the venue. We intended to offer a safe, welcoming space for those wanting to watch the matches but with the ongoing LGBTQIA+ and human rights issues surrounding the event, we now understand this is a contradiction to the values we hold as a venue.

"We are committed to creating a venue for all communities, where everyone is welcome. As previously planned we'll be fundraising throughout the duration of the World Cup for Yorkshire Mesmac."

Hundreds have applauded the bar's decision. Commenting on social media Jess Greenwood-Owens said: "Amazing. Well done for prioritising morals over profit."

Sue Denim added: "Great call. Well done folks." Cass Oliver said: "Good move, we need to take a stand on these things."

Sarah said: "Proud of you guys . FIFA should be totally ashamed. Won’t be watching."

A number of other bars across the UK are joining their protest. In Leeds, Headrow House has also decided not to show the games.
