Leeds boy 'set stolen motorbike on fire' after crash says 'sickened' onlooker

A Leeds woman has recounted the “sickening” sight as a pair of teenagers crashed into a car on a stolen motorbike then one allegedly attempted to destroy the bike.

The crash took place beside East End Park on East Park, just before the bridge on Park Parade and on the junction with East Park Road at 12.33pm on Monday.

Two boys, 14 and 16, were taken to hospital and their injuries are said not to be life threatening. East Park Parade resident Lesley Barber, 62, was smoking a cigarette on her doorstep when it all kicked off.

Lesley, a mother-of-two and a senior carer, was stunned by what she saw, claiming one of the boys set the stolen motorbike on fire in the park after the nasty crash. She rushed to the aid of the boys as one was knocked out, and has spoken of the trauma of the driver affected who was “scared to death”.

This comes after Leeds City Council launched a consultation into fining nuisance and anti-social drivers £100 on the spot. But Lesley is calling for even harsher measures as she says nuisance driving from young teens is a regular occurrence on the busy street.

Lesley Barber said: “It was sickening. You could hear the thud. He’d hit the windscreen and bounced onto the road.

“He’d got up and was running around, took the bike into the park, set it on fire. He must have been full of adrenaline. It was unbelievable.

“The other one seemed to hit the car and go over the car. He was knocked out cold.

“The driver was just wandering around, it was too much for him. I think he was in his mid-30s. That poor driver probably won’t drive again for months, he was traumatised. He didn’t know what to do, he just kept coming back asking if the kid was dead. It had scared him to death.”

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “At 12.33pm today, police were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and motorcycle at the junction of East Park Parade and East Park Road in Leeds.

“The motorbike was carrying two youths, aged 14 and 16. They were both taken to hospital for treatment.

“The motorbike, a grey Yamaha MT-125, was removed from the scene to the nearby park after it caught fire following the collision. It was subsequently confirmed to have been stolen.

“A scene and road closure remain in place, and enquiries are ongoing into the incident.”

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “We received an emergency call at 12.27pm today to reports of a collision involving a car and motorbike in the East End Park area of Leeds. Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene and two patients were conveyed to hospital.”

Anyone who witnessed any part of the incident or the circumstances leading up to it, particularly anyone with relevant dashcam footage, is asked to contact police via 101 quoting log 796 of August 15 or online via www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat .
