Lee Sun-Kyun Honored At Busan International Film Festival

Lee Sun-kyun

The upcoming Busan International Film Festival will pay tribute to the late actor Lee Sun-kyun by presenting a Special Program in Focus, In Memory of Lee Sun-kyun. This program will showcase six of his most beloved works, celebrating his contributions to Korean cinema. Additionally, Lee will be posthumously awarded the prestigious Korea Cinema Award, recognizing his efforts in promoting Korean cinema on a global scale.

The program will kick off with screenings of three of Lee's early films. Among them is 'Paju,' a film that earned him the Best Actor Award at the Last Palmas International Film Festival in 2010. In 'Paju,' Lee portrays an ex-political activist entangled in a complex love story with his sister-in-law. Another highlight is 'Our Sunhi,' a 2013 film directed by Hong Sang-soo, which garnered the Best Director Award at the 2013 Locarno Film Festival. The lineup also includes 'A Hard Day,' a 2014 Cannes Film Festival selection where Lee shines as a corrupt detective.

Furthermore, the festival will feature an episode from the acclaimed 2018 TV series 'My Mister,' produced by Studio Dragon. The selected episode aims to showcase the exceptional talent and versatility of Lee as an actor. Notably, Lee's role in the groundbreaking film 'Parasite' by Bong Joon-ho will also be highlighted. 'Parasite' made history as the first Korean film to win the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and clinched four Academy Awards in 2019. Lee's portrayal of the oblivious father in the film resonated with audiences worldwide.

The 29th Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from October 2 to 11 at the Busan Cinema Center. The festival aims to bring together diverse voices and perspectives in a shared celebration of cinema. Attendees are encouraged to engage in respectful and constructive conversations, fostering a community of open dialogue and exchange of ideas.
