Lee Johnson has agreed terms with Hibs but he faces an anxious wait to see if he will be appointed as their new manager - with Jon Dahl Tomasson also under consideration.
The Easter Road board opened talks with Johnson last week and the broad financial principles of a deal have now been agreed.
Hibs, however, still have former Malmo boss Dahl Tomasson in the frame.
Johnson and the Dane have both come through second interviews and will now be put in front of the board to decide on Shaun Maloney’s successor.
The Englishman is the favourite but Tomasson also has support within the hierarchy and from sections of the fanbase.
Johnson has had spells at Sunderland, Bristol City, Oldham Athletic and Barnsley.
Dahl Tomasson, who won 112 caps for Denmark, has been in charge of Roda, Excelsior and Malmo, while he has also been assistant at Vitesse and of the Danish national team.
He made headlines as his Malmo side knocked Rangers out of the Champions League qualifiers earlier this season and had a stellar playing career with the likes of AC Milan and Newcastle United.
Hibs have left caretaker boss David Gray in charge for the season and he will take the team for the final time at home to St Mirren today.
Gray will remain as part of the staff as part of any new coaching team.
Hibs have already agreed a pre-contract with former Scotland keeper David Marshall.
