With 20 points at half-time, LeBron James challenged himself to break the NBA's all-time scoring record when speaking to his two sons during the interval.
James needed 37 points on the night to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record, which has been standing for almost 40 years, with the legend in attendance to see the clash against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
After a strong first-half performance, it was evident that the Los Angeles Lakers were going to attempt to feed James the ball in an attempt to pull it off - with it also being their best chance of scoring.
James got into a rhythm in the third quarter, knocking down jumpshots and driving to the rim with ease, using his huge frame to power through defenders.
And with just seconds to go in the third quarter, the Lakers ran a play for James to be isolated on a defender, as he used his strength to back his man down before hitting a fadeaway jumpshot which hit nothing but net.
James hugged his two sons who were sat courtside, and could both be playing in the NBA within the next five years. A video later emerged of James challenging himself to break the record, when speaking to his sons at the interval.
The basketball legend was heard telling sons Bronny and Bryce: ""Right here huh... go ahead and get it? I'll get it." Minutes later, he duly delivered.
Bronny showed LeBron the video later in the locker room. In reaction to seeing the video, James says: "That's tough, that's tough. You got that saved? Sent it to me. That's funny!".
James was congratulated by Abdul-Jabber who was in attendance, with fellow stars such as Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Rihanna, Drake and Kendrick Lamar having words for him in a tribute video after breaking the record.
James' record is highly unlikely to ever be passed, with the 38-year-old still playing at an elite level and could continue playing for years to come.
After breaking the record and with the game paused, James addressed those in attendance and watching at home. He said: "I thank you guys so much for allowing me to be a part of something I've always dreamed about. I would never in a million years dreamt this to be even better than what it is tonight."
