LeBron becomes first NBA player to reach 39,000 points

Lebron James has become the first NBA player to surpass 39,000 career points as the LA Lakers ran out 131-99 winners over the Utah Jazz.

The 38-year-old reached the milestone early in the first quarter of Wednesday's home win (AEDT) with a shot from beyond the three-point arc.

The only other NBA player to have passed 38,000 points was legendary centre Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38.387), while the closest active player to James's record is Phoenix Suns veteran Kevin Durant, still way behind on 27,331.

The 21-year NBA veteran finished with 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds against the Jazz, who never led at any point.

James was put on ice for the entire fourth quarter as the Lakers opened up a lead that stretched to 39 points late.

The Lakers have now completed a 4-0 run through the group stage of the NBA's inaugural in-season tournament and will likely host a quarter-final next month.

Tyrese Haliburton is firming as a contender for the tournament's MVP award after inspiring the Indiana Pacers to a 157-152 comeback defeat of Atlanta.

Haliburton had a season-low 12 points against Orlando on Monday but recovered to score 26 in the third quarter alone against the Hawks.

His efforts sparked a fightback after the Hawks had led by as many as 20 points in the minutes before half-time.

A Haliburton three-pointer put the Pacers ahead in the final 90 seconds before the last change and they held on thanks to Buddy Hield's game-sealing basket in the final minute.

Haliburton, the NBA's leader for assists this season, had 16 dimes to go with his 37 points as the Pacers clinched a spot in the tournament's quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old is averaging 29.3 points and 14.7 assists a game in the in-season tournament.

Atlanta's own guard Trae Young led their charge with 38 points and eight assists in a losing effort.

The Cleveland Cavaliers blew an 18-point lead before holding on for a three-point overtime defeat of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Cleveland's Darius Garland had 32 points in the 122-119 home win on Wednesday (AEDT), while teammates Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley racked up double-doubles.

Allen had the last of his 26 points on a go-ahead basket with 18 seconds remaining, snatching the Cavs' lead back and ultimately sealing the win.

The Cavs are now on a four-game winning streak while the Sixers have dropped a third game from 13 starts this season and sit 2-2 in the in-season tournament.
