Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has taken action following comments made by Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf regarding negotiations between Iran and France on a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon. Mikati instructed Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib to summon the chargé d’affaires at the Iranian embassy in Beirut to seek clarification on the matter.
Ghalibaf's remarks, made in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro, suggested that Tehran is open to discussing a ceasefire agreement that would involve implementing a UN resolution that ended the 2006 conflict between Lebanon and Hezbollah. This resolution had led to Hezbollah's withdrawal from certain areas in southern Lebanon.
Prime Minister Mikati's office confirmed that he also directed the foreign minister to communicate Lebanon's position on this issue to the Iranian envoy. The move underscores Lebanon's commitment to its national interests and sovereignty.
The potential negotiations between Iran and France regarding a ceasefire in Lebanon have raised concerns and sparked diplomatic efforts to clarify the situation. Mikati's proactive approach in seeking clarification demonstrates the importance of clear communication and dialogue in resolving regional tensions.
As the situation continues to develop, it remains to be seen how Iran, France, and other stakeholders will engage in discussions regarding a potential ceasefire agreement in Lebanon. The outcome of these diplomatic efforts could have significant implications for the stability and security of the region.
