Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati engaged in diplomatic efforts over the weekend to push for a ceasefire amidst escalating tensions in the region. On Saturday, Mikati held discussions with US presidential envoy Amos Hochstein and Iranian official Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to address the pressing issue.
The Lebanese state National News Agency (NNA) reported that Mikati emphasized the government's commitment to prioritizing a ceasefire, ending Israeli aggression, and ensuring the security and well-being of Lebanon and its citizens during his meeting with Ghalibaf in Beirut.
During his phone call with Hochstein, Mikati focused on finding ways to de-escalate military confrontations and emphasized the importance of pursuing a comprehensive political solution based on the 2006 United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. This resolution calls for a permanent ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.
Resolution 1701 also outlines specific measures, including the withdrawal of Hezbollah forces to the north of the Litani River in Lebanon and the exclusive presence of the Lebanese military in the border region. Mikati's discussions with both Hochstein and Ghalibaf underscored Lebanon's commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution to the current crisis and ensuring the safety and stability of the country.
