Leapmotor B05 review: I drove the £29k electric hatchback with 300 miles of range

The Leapmotor B05 is a Chinese made family hatchback sold through familiar Stellantis dealers - (Steve Fowler)

Not everybody wants an SUV. You only have to look at the sales success of Europe’s best-selling car, the Dacia Sandero, to see that there is still plenty of appetite for a straightforward hatchback with a sensible price. The Leapmotor B05 is aimed at exactly that sort of buyer, just with an electric motor, a big battery and quite a lot more technology than you might expect for the money.

It arrives as Leapmotor continues to build its UK presence under the Stellantis umbrella, joining the T03 city car and the B10 and C10 SUVs. The B05 is a more conventional-looking proposition than any of those cars: a five-door family hatchback that sits in the same broad part of the market as other electric alternatives to the traditional Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Kia Ceed-shaped family car.
