Leandro Trossard hands Mikel Arteta an Arsenal team selection dilemma for Liverpool trip

Anfield hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Arsenal in recent years, but Mikel Arteta's side will almost certainly need to avoid defeat away at Liverpool this Sunday in a fixture that is sure to have massive implications at the top of the Premier League table.

Not since the 2012/2013 season have the Gunners left the red side of Merseyside with all three points. They do have a couple of goalless draws in the Carabao Cup to perhaps take some solace from, but their record in this particular fixture in the league does make for pretty grim reading.

However, it might just be the ideal time to face Liverpool. Since thrashing Manchester United 7-0 last month Jurgen Klopp's side have lost their last three games in a row and will have less recovery time than Arsenal due to being in action against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

And by the time the game kicks off at Anfield, the home side may have lost even further ground in the battle for Champions League qualification, whilst the Gunners' lead at the top of the table could be down to five points once again with Manchester City in action away at Southampton around 24 hours prior.

Therefore it's important Arteta gets his team selection spot on. Although, based on events from earlier in the season, since the January transfer window closed and the 4-1 win over Leeds United at the weekend, that task has become a little bit more difficult for the Arsenal manager.

There’s a strong argument that Leandro Trossard was the best signing made by any Premier League club in January. The statistics certainly back up this theory as his seven assists since sealing a £21m move from Brighton is the most of any player across the entire Gunners squad aside from Bukayo Saka this season.

Then when taking into account that the Belgium international has a hat-trick at Anfield on his CV - this season nonetheless in a 3-3 draw in Brighton colours - he's surely the ideal candidate to start on Sunday as Arsenal look to end their awful record away at Liverpool.

After all, Arteta has shown on numerous occasions during his tenure as Gunners manager that he will reward players in form: "I have very wild dreams!" the Spaniard said in the post-Leeds press conference when asked if he could have dreamt about Trossard proving to be this good.

"No seriously, we knew about his quality and what he could bring to the team. He can play, right, left, he can play as a midfielder he can be a false nine. He's really contributing to the team. He's taking responsibility to make that happen and we love him."

However, assuming the in-form Gabriel Martinelli starts on the left-hand side of the attack and Saka is recalled on the opposite flank after a substitute appearance against Leeds United, Trossard will be battling with Gabriel Jesus for the opportunity to lead the line against Liverpool.

The Brazilian certainly staked his claim by netting a brace on his return to the Premier League starting lineup and it's been noted that he's close to being 100 per cent fit following three months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

So as Arteta spends this week preparing for Liverpool away in an attempt to end Arsenal's Anfield hoodoo, he is well-equipped in attack to cause the home side problems but who he chooses to lead the line might prove to be one of the most difficult decisions so far this season.
