PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers will be able to add three new games and Destiny 2’s Beyond Light expansion to their library on Tuesday, February 7.
PS Plus Essential games tend to leak with some regularity these days. And this month is no different – reportedly leading February’s lineup is the critically acclaimed OlliOlli World, along with Evil Dead The Game, Mafia: Definitive Edition, and the Destiny 2: Beyond Light expansion. This news comes from the twitter user @billbil_kun (via VGC) who has established a reliable track record when it comes to leaking PS Plus games ahead of the official monthly announcement.
OlliOlli World, from Rollerdrome developer, Roll7, dazzled last year thanks to its strong arcade gameplay, and expansion in scope of the previously basic series. The original OlliOlli and its sequel were both staples of my PS Vita, eating up most of my playtime on Sony’s handheld. I can’t wait to dig into this new entry and likely lose copious amounts of free time to it.
Another 2022 title making its way to the service is the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game, Evil Dead The Game. The adaptation of the beloved Sam Raimi films followed in the footsteps of other popular games like Dead By Daylight and Friday the 13th to mild applause. While praised it for its attention to detail in adapting the series’ lore and characters to the videogame world, it doesn't quite live up to the behemoth that is Dead by Daylight.
Plus you can play as Evil Dead’s Ash Williams in that game anyway (who's also made a recent appearance in Fortnite). It’s worth checking out, but fans of the series are likely to get far more out of it than those previously unacquainted.
In an unprecedented move, Sony is offering a Destiny 2 expansion as a part of PS Plus Essential with Beyond Light. The move makes sense, as the game itself is free-to-play, and this way new players will have access to extra content that would normally cost them £24.99 / $29.99 / AU$44.95. Interestingly, February will mark one year since Sony purchased Destiny developer Bungie, making the timing of this even more appropriate.
Finally, rounding out the month's PS Plus Essential games is Mafia: Definitive Edition. Set in 1930’s Illinois, the 2020 remake of the 2002 open world classic sees you take the role of a taxi driver-turned-gangster as a part of a prominent crime family. However, @billbill_kun notes that some regions may replace Mafia with a different game.
Each of these games is set to offer both PS5 and PS4 versions – bar Mafia, which is only the backwards compatible PS4 version. This month’s PS Plus Essential lineup announcement is delayed, so we’ll find out for sure on Wednesday February 1, when Sony itself is set to announce which games will be joining the service. We’ll soon find out which games are set to join the higher-tier PS Plus Extra and Premium too, with eight games leaving PS Plus in February.
