League title win was worth the wait for St Cuthbert Wanderers

Lifting the South of Scotland League title was a moment worth the wait for St Cuthbert Wanderers manager Jordan Williamson.

The Kirkcudbright side won the league last Wednesday courtesy of a 6-2 win over Nithsdale Wanderers at St Mary’s Park.

The squad were presented with the trophy after their 4-2 victory against Newton Stewart on Saturday in another home fixture.

The manager savoured the moment and credited the players with giving him their support after taking the reins.

Williamson said: “The players deserved that moment for everything they’ve done. They’ve bought into something a little bit different from the norm in terms of the way we do things.

“I could tell by the expressions and the way the squad reacted and the emotion that came through. You’ve got boys like Dale Milligan and Ross Hunter that have been there since before I was put in charge waiting for this moment and other boys that we’ve brought in along the way as well. We’ve all bought into this way of working and trying to be the best that we can be.”

He added: “The first day I came in we had five players signed and two players at my first training session. But me and Ross believed we’d get to this moment because we believed in the way that we worked. Despite some criticism from others we knew if we stuck to our guns we’d be successful.

“I’m so glad that we’re champions. We all enjoyed Saturday because of that.

“But we don’t stop now because we’ve got four cups and a play off now.”

The hard work continued this week with a 3-1 win against Lochar Thistle in the Potts Cup at Palmerston to set up a semi final with Creetown. And last night Saints took on the Caledonian Braves in Kirkcudbright in the Haig Gordon Cup semi final.

That match will be followed up with Saturday’s Tweedie Cup final at Trammondford Park against Newton Stewart.

It makes for a busy month for Williamson.

He said: “We were happy to go through on Monday but you could tell there was a little bit of an impact from the weekend on some of the players and it showed.

“We could play 10 games in May so it’s going to be tough.

“It’s a case of rotating the squad. But when you do that there comes a risk of us becoming a little bit disjointed but we are up for the challenge.”
