League of Legends’ WASD controls pass balance test, headed to Ranked

Riot Games is officially bringing one of League of Legends’ most experimental features into the competitive spotlight. After months of testing, iteration, and player feedback, WASD controls have passed the developer’s internal balance checks and are set to arrive in Ranked with Patch 26.9 as part of Season 2.

The long-awaited move follows extensive playtesting across hundreds of thousands of players, with Riot focusing on a simple but critical question: can WASD compete fairly with traditional point-and-click controls? According to the League developers, the answer is now yes.

To determine whether WASD was ready for Ranked, Riot established two core criteria: the control scheme could not outperform point-and-click in win rate, and the gap between the two systems needed to be minimal. After multiple patches of tuning, WASD now sits at near parity, with point-and-click still holding a slight edge for now.

Riot expects that difference to shrink as players gain more experience with movement-based controls. In other words, mastery, not mechanics, should define the gap going forward.

Beyond raw data, Riot also evaluated player perception. In blind surveys conducted after matches, most players were unable to reliably tell which control scheme their opponents were using. That lack of noticeable difference in gameplay experience was a key signal that WASD could coexist competitively.

Fine-tuning movement and combat feel

Getting WASD to this point required more than just statistical balance. Riot made significant adjustments to how the system interacts with League’s core gameplay, particularly movement and ability usage.

Pathfinding was one of the biggest hurdles. Unlike point-and-click, which automatically routes champions around terrain, WASD introduces direct directional input, which can lead players straight into walls. Riot refined how champions slide along terrain, stop at edges, and navigate tight jungle spaces to ensure movement feels smooth and predictable.

The team also reworked the ability follow-up logic. Some champions previously auto-attacked after casting abilities, but with WASD, this could lock players into unwanted actions. Riot selectively adjusted which abilities trigger follow-up attacks to preserve responsiveness without sacrificing control for the players.

New systems, keybinds, and accessibility upgrades

The rollout of WASD is backed by a broader overhaul of League’s input system. Players can now set champion-specific keybinds, allowing for deeper customization across both control schemes.

Riot has also introduced several accessibility-focused features, including the ability to move the mouse cursor using custom inputs and partial joystick support through remapping. Expanded keybinding options and more granular control over mouse actions further open up how players interact with the game.

These changes are not just about adding a new way to play, they represent a shift toward making League more flexible and accessible to a wider PC audience.

WASD’s arrival in Ranked marks a major milestone for the game that has relied on point-and-click controls for over a decade. While Riot is not positioning it as a replacement, it is now a fully supported alternative that can stand on equal competitive footing.

As Season 2 begins, the real test will come from the player base. Whether WASD becomes a niche preference or a widely adopted standard in ranked, one thing is clear: League’s control scheme is no longer set in stone.
