Riot Games announced that it was working on a new trading card game based on the League of Legends brand, which is known as Project K.
The teaser featured game director Dave Guskin and executive producer Chengran Chai introducing the new project. This is not a physical version of the digital card game Legends of Runeterra but takes some inspiration for designs and settings from it.
League of Legends Trading Card Game
Every single champion in Project K will be given their own thematic deck and the teaser showcased some of them, particularly those for Viktor, Volibear, Yasuo, and Jinx.
Guskin said that it was a privilege to create a League of Legends IP game that would serve a different kind of audience.
He added that these are players who want to connect across the table and immerse themselves with their family and friends in the gameplay, setting, and characters they love.
The planned trading card game is designed to be both a casual and competitive game, according to Philstar Global.
The development team is expecting Project K to be the "best social TCG" and will have regular events as well as a competitive ecosystem. The trading card game is set to be released by region starting sometime next year.
Riot Games also announced that the first region to experience what Project K has to deliver will be China. Players will be able to try out several trial decks during the upcoming Teamfight Tactics Macau Open that will be held from Dec. 13, 2024, to Dec. 14, 2024.
Project K Details
Project K will be playable in the traditional 1v1 TCG formal, but it can also be played in groups of up to four players as a free-for-all or in duos.
It will also feature a TCG mana system where players can get two Runes every turn that they can use for units and spells, Polygon said.
The League of Legends trading card game started just last year, which makes it have one of the quickest turnaround for Riot Games. After the original idea was pitched, Guskin said that he and his team developed the basic game engine just a few months after.
He said that they then started adding members to the trading card game's team, taking from the studio's list of TCG enthusiasts. Guskin mentioned the excitement that he observed at both the Riot Los Angeles and Shanghai offices.
Project K is only one of the many spin-offs based on the League of Legends brand, with others being Teamfight Tactics and Wild Rift. There is also the fighting game 2XKO that is set to launch sometime next year, according to The Verge.
