Riot Games has hinted that they are working on bringing back the "classic" experience in their hit MOBA game, "League of Legends," to give players, both old and new, a taste of the "good ol' days."
'League of Legends' Classic Teased by Riot Games
Riot revealed the upcoming mode through a teaser trailer featuring "League of Legends" Executive Producer Paul Bellezza and League Studio head Andrei van Roon, who are seen reminiscing about what they call the good old days of the game.
The video leans heavily on nostalgia, referencing old items like Heart of Gold and the roughly 40 Champion roster available during the game's beta period.
The legacy mode appears similar in concept to classic servers that other long-running live service games have offered over the years, most notably "World of Warcraft Classic," which let players return to earlier expansions of the MMO exactly as they originally launched.
Other titles have experimented with similar throwback modes as a way to let veteran players relive earlier eras of a game without permanently altering the current live version.
Riot did not share specific gameplay details in the teaser but confirmed that more information on "League of Legends Classic" will be revealed during the MSI finals on July 11.
What Will 'League of Legends Classic' Bring?
While Riot has stayed quiet on the specifics, the announcement has already sparked plenty of fan speculation. Many believe the developer could bring back the original Runes system, which once let players boost specific stats and pick from a Mastery skill tree filled with more niche bonuses.
The exact time period the mode will represent also remains unclear, since the teaser suggests Riot might blend multiple eras of "League of Legends" together rather than focusing on just one.
Some fans have also pointed to the possible return of pre-rework champions like Graves, along with older items such as Deathfire Grasp and Frozen Mallet that were removed from the game over the years.
"League of Legends" has gone through major changes since launching more than 15 years ago, with the Summoner's Rift map receiving multiple overhauls and the Champion roster expanding well past 170 picks.
Will Riot Games Bring Back 'LoL's Season 3?
Seasons 3 through 5 are widely regarded by the "League of Legends" community as the game's golden age, with Season 3 in particular often cited as the best version of the MOBA the franchise has produced.
If Riot leans into that specific stretch for "League of Legends Classic," it would likely resonate strongly with veteran players who started during that period.
Speculation has already started building around which champions could return to their Season 3 forms if Riot does go that route. Fans have floated names like Warwick, Dr. Mundo, Kayle, Sion, and Katarina as strong candidates, since all five have undergone significant reworks since that era and looked drastically different in both kit and visual design back then.
Bringing back their original abilities alongside the old Runes and Mastery systems would essentially recreate the exact moment in the game's history that many consider its peak.
The announcement also arrives as the "League of Legends" universe continues expanding well beyond the original MOBA, with spinoffs like "2XKO," "Teamfight Tactics," and an in-development MMORPG already in the works.
Riot has not confirmed an official release date for "League of Legends Classic" at this time.
