Rugby league great Trevor Gillmeister has blamed sporting injuries for not being able to comply with police instructions after a disturbance at an inner-city pub.

The former Brisbane and Queensland player on Monday said he was at the "wrong place at the wrong time" when he was arrested over an incident at Brisbane's Stock Exchange Hotel.
