The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has gained the upper hand in the bypolls held in 42 local body wards on Tuesday by winning 23 seats against the United Democratic Front's (UDF) 12. An LDF-backed Independent has won one seat while six wards have gone to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Among the LDF constituents, CPI(M) has won 16 seats and the CPI seven. For the UDF, the Congress has won 11 and the Indian Union Muslim League one, the State Election Commission said after the counting of votes on Wednesday.
The bypolls had reported a turnout of 78.24%.
