A lawyer and former council election candidate was rushed to hospital after being "stabbed" at his office in Glasgow in an attempted murder bid.
The incident took place around 2.45pm yesterday when Muhammad Shoaib was assaulted at his business premises on Victoria Road in the south side of the city.
Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service, raced to the scene and the 69-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.
The extent of his injuries are not yet known, but the immigration and asylum lawyer and owner of Shoaib Associates is said to have been able to return home from hospital today.
Mohammad Asif, Glasgow-based director of Afghan Human Rights Foundation, sent his well wishes to his pal on Facebook, writing: "My good friend Mohammad Shoaib who is a solicitor and immigration adviser was stabbed in his office yesterday on Glasgow Victoria road yesterday. I wish him a speedy recovery."
SNP MP Alison Thewliss also tweeted: "I’m shocked to hear this news - I hope Muhammad Shoaib makes a speedy recovery."
Mr Shoaib ran as an Alba party candidate in the Pollokshields ward in the local council elections earlier this year. Esayas Neguse, of Glasgow, appeared in court today charged with attempted murder following the event.
The 35-year-old was also charged with assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement and danger of life. He made no plea and was remanded in custody for further examination. He will appear again in the next eight days.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 2.45pm on Wednesday, 21 September, to a report of a disturbance in the Victoria Road area of Glasgow.
“Emergency services attended and a 69-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.
“A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear at court on Thursday, 22 September.”
