Lawrence Okolie explains why he won't fight Canelo Alvarez at cruiserweight

Lawrence Okolie feels his physical advantages over Canelo Alvarez are too vast for a potential fight to ever take place.

Alvarez is the undisputed super middleweight champion, and has won titles at light-heavyweight during his run to be considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

And he is now flirting with the idea of moving up to cruiserweight for a showdown with Ilunga Makabu for his WBC world cruiserweight title.

Okolie has insisted that he wants to unify the division, but he doesn't believe that he will get a chance to face Alvarez even if he is to complete that goal.

Speaking with Mirror Fighting in an exclusive chat after launching the boohooMAN ‘Lightweight’ Activewear Range, he said that while Alvarez is one of the greats, he finds it hard to imagine a bout happening between them.

"No matter what, Canelo is a great fighter," Okolie explained. "He might be smaller or whatever else but he's pound-for-pound No.1.

"Him and Makabu is actually an interesting fight that makes you go 'oh, who do I favour in that one?'

"I'm realistic and I just can't see me and Canelo fighting, I'd be so shocked if they wanted that fight.

"Not because they're scared or anything but just the height difference, the weight difference, the strength it's just too much.

"He's probably the best in the world at the moment, a very talented fighter, but there's just limitations to the human body.

"That is that someone who weighs in 200lb vs someone who's able to weigh in at 168lb, not to mention what they are on the day.

"It would be nice for my bank account and of course my legacy, but I just can't see it happening personally."

Before Okolie can concern himself with unifying the division, however, he must once again defend his WBO world title against Michael Cieslak in London on February 27.

The pair looked set to fight on short notice in 2020 when the belt was vacant, but Cieslak had another bout scheduled and couldn't make the fight happen.

But they will now square off at the O2 Arena in Okolie's hometown of London, with an exciting spectacle expected.

And he is hoping that Cieslak will spell the end of his bouts with challengers, with unification bouts against Makabu as well as Mairis Briedis, Arsen Goulamirian or Ryad Mehry on the agenda for 2022.

"I want to unify the division," he continued. "I have a real opportunity to become one of the best cruiserweights to come out of Britain if not the world.

"I just want to maximise my opportunity and to do that I have to unify, only David Haye out of Britain has managed to do that.

"I don't want to overlook Cieslak because he's actually really good, but as long as I can beat him in the fashion that I want, then if I have my way it will be all champions from there.

"It's easy for me to say that, but there are three other people who need to agree to that same thing."

Online fashion retailer boohooMAN have launched their most lightweight & breathable Activewear collection to date fronted by Lawrence Okolie.
