Lawless Frontier is the featured activity in the upcoming Renegades expansion for Destiny 2, and it promises to be one of the most ambitious experiences in the game, with a dedicated destination screen, multiple progression tracks, and even rotating featured missions with higher stakes and better rewards.
In the developer livestream on Nov. 25, Bungie showcased the Lawless Frontier activity coming to Destiny 2 with Renegades. Everything related to the activity takes place on a dedicated destination map, where you can play different mission types, enter the Tharsis Outpost social space, and invade other players.

There are two maps on each destination (Mars, Venus, and Europa) and three mission types: Bounty Hunt, Sabotage, and Smuggle. As showcased in the livestream, a mission has multiple stages and a 30-minute timer, with difficulty increasing the longer you stay. Complete the objective, call in the extraction, and survive the final onslaught to get the sweet Star Wars-themed loot.
Throughout the activity, you can use the Renegade abilities Bungie teased a while back. Using a dedicated button, you can bring a separate loadout of abilities. These include strafing runs, Cabal drop pods with ammo, Behemoth walkers, deflector shields, and more. They’re powerful, with the developer describing them as “pocket Supers,” and you can further upgrade them through the reward tracks of each of the three syndicates.
Renegade abilities can also be a game-changer because Lawless Frontier doesn’t have regenerating health. Similar to The Nether (although a bit more forgiving) from Episode Heresy, you must be careful when engaging, collect health pickups, and strategically use your abilities to survive.
Invade or be invaded to get the best loot in Lawless Frontier

In the endgame, you unlock the Contested Territory mission type and Invasions. The Contested Territory rotates every day, with all three syndicates fighting over the zone. On the highest difficulties, Contested Territory missions offer the best rewards, but these can also be invaded by other players.
Invaders can use Deathmark tokens to set their rewards, and after picking out their own loadout of Renegade abilities, head into the Lawless Frontier. Invader’s objective is to get six kills or three kills and three crests within five minutes and three lives. Defeating the invader increases the timer for the defenders, grants revives, and extractables that you can exchange for additional rewards.
Invasion can happen at any point throughout the activity, but only once per run. So if you get an enemy player on the field early on, you can relax for the rest of the run. The developer also mentioned that time-to-kill is roughly the same as in PvP, but you should account for non-regenerating health.
Overall, Lawless Frontier seems to be one of the biggest and most cohesive activities Destiny 2 has ever seen. It also moves away from the tedious Portal grind that we’ve been tied to since the release of The Edge of Fate, with the Portal still getting a new set of rewards and some returning activities.
