Ellery Walker Harper was born in 2001, followed by the birth of their daughter, Jaya, in 2004. The couple tied the knot in 2005 but later separated in 2013.

In 2020, Dern won a Golden Globe for her role in Marriage Story, drawing inspiration from her personal experiences with divorce. She expressed gratitude for her children, emphasizing the importance of redefining family dynamics post-divorce.
