In the wake of the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump, Latin American and Latino leaders have expressed solid condemnations and extended their solidarity.
The incident, which occurred this Saturday during a campaign event in Pennsylvania, has sparked a flurry of reactions across the political spectrum of the region. Latino senators, congressmen, and other political leaders were shocked and dismayed.
Latino politicians speak against political violence
"We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the Secret Service for their swift action today. We are engaged with President Biden and former President Trump, and their campaigns. We are taking every possible measure to ensure their safety and security," said the highest-ranking Latino in the Biden cabinet, Cuban American Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security.
Political violence is unacceptable in any form. As we wait for more information, I commend the Secret Service agents who acted quickly to protect the former president and prevent further harm to the crow," said Democratic congressman Joaquín Castro.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortés:
There is no place for political violence, including the horrific incident we just witnessed in Pennsylvania. It is absolutely unacceptable and must be denounced in the strongest terms. My heart goes out to all the victims and I wish the former President a speedy recovery.
Mexico's Official Stance
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was quick to denounce the attack. Using his social media account, López Obrador described the violence as "irrational and inhumane." He emphasized that such acts are unacceptable, regardless of political differences, reinforcing his administration's commitment to peace and dialogue.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the virtual president-elect of Mexico, echoed López Obrador's sentiments. Sheinbaum stressed that violence is counterproductive and does not contribute to resolving conflicts, highlighting the need for peaceful discourse in democratic societies.
Alicia Bárcenas, Mexico's Foreign Minister, also condemned the attack, stating that "nothing justifies political violence." She underscored the importance of protecting the freedom of ideas and rejecting any forms of violence in democratic processes.
Broader Latin American Reactions
Other Latin American leaders have similarly voiced their disapproval of the violence. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the incident in Brazil and expressed his solidarity with Trump and his family. "What we saw today is unacceptable," he said.
Chile's President Gabriel Boric also condemned the act, stating that "political violence has no place in our society."
Meanwhile, the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, condemned the violence in the United States and expressed her solidarity with the Republican after he was injured in one ear. " Violence begets more violence. I regret what is happening in the U.S. electoral process. My solidarity with Donald Trump," emphasized Castro in a message on her social media.
From Venezuela, opposition leaderMaría Corina Machado sent her solidarity with Trump, his family, and the people of the United States. "The Venezuelans, who suffer from the most crude and systematic political violence, long to live in peace and democratic civility in our country and throughout the Americas," Machado stated, highlighting the parallels between the struggles faced in Venezuela and the recent violence in the U.S.
Argentinian President Javier Milei blamed the assassination attempt against Donald Trump as the work of the "extreme left" and published a photo of the two of them on Instagram.
