Latest travel updates for Italy and Greece as Covid rules scrapped

Holiday hotspots Italy and Greece have both eased their coronavirus travel rules in time for summer. Italy has removed all of its entry requirements, while Greece has eased its rules on mask wearing.

With a huge surge in holidays abroad the changes will be welcome news to British tourists. The UK had removed all its travel restrictions in March, with other countries gradually easing their requirements afterwards.

Now passengers arriving in Italy will no longer be subject to any Covid rules. According to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), as of June 1 all entry requirements have been lifted in Italy.

Previously passengers had to show either proof of being fully, having a negative test result or having recovered from coronavirus within the previous 180 days.

Some rules still remain surrounding mask wearing. An FFP2 mask is required for all passengers entering Italy by plane, ferry, train or coach. They are also compulsory on public transport, in indoor public venues such as theatres and cinemas and when visiting healthcare facilities.

The Green Pass and Super Green Pass were no longer needed to visit businesses or use services in Italy from May 1, however a Green Pass is still needed to visit hospitals and care homes.

Greece has also eased its Covid rules further. The country removed entry requirements from May 1, with passengers no longer required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test.

Now the country has eased its rules on mask-wearing. From June 1, face masks will only be required on public transport and in hospitals and care facilities for the elderly. Masks will no longer be mandatory in all other spaces. Previously they were needed in supermarkets and museums.
