Many people will have holidays abroad planned for October half term but may not be aware of the latest passport requirements.
With the pandemic mostly in the past, many people are enjoying the ease of getting around again. Most countries have now lifted coronavirus restrictions, however, people flying to countries such as Spain, France, Turkey and Greece do need to make sure that they meet certain passport requirements following Brexit.
Any travellers arriving in the EU and Schengen zone from outside of the EU will need to ensure that their passport complies with the criteria. It’s important to be aware of the updated requirements, particularly if you have not travelled to the EU for some time, reported Manchester Evening News.

According to advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (the FCDO) for travel to destinations including Spain, Greece and France, you need to ensure that your passport meets the following:
- Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the date of issue)
- Is valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave (check the expiry date)
You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180 day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sporting events, or for short-term studies or training.
UK travellers need to make sure that their passport is stamped upon entry and exit of the Schengen area. If you use the e-gates at the airport you need to make sure that your passport is also stamped. Under the travel advice for Turkey, the FCDO says that your passport needs to be valid for at least 150 days from the date of arrival and there should be a full blank page for entry and exit stamps.
