Last Moments of North Carolina Grandparents Killed by Hurricane Helene Captured in Haunting Photo

The last moments of two North Carolina grandparents were caught on camera just before their house collapsed into the floodwaters from Hurricane Helene.

The photos shared to Facebook show the grandparents sitting on the roof of their home, looking around as floodwaters flow past them, with the muddy water just inches away.

The couple's daughter, Jessica Drye Turner, posted the photos to Facebook on Sept. 27, along with a desperate cry for help. She said the family called 911, adding that they were "not the only ones in need of a rescue." First responders were ultimately unable to get there fast enough, and the house collapsed into the floodwaters.

Turner's parents and their grandson Micah ended up drowning in the flood. Micah's mother Megan, Turner's sister, was washed away in the floodwater too, but made it out alive.

"I cannot convey in words the sorrow, heartbreak and devastation my sisters and I are going through nor imagine the pain before us," Turner wrote on Facebook. "Please lift my sister who lost her son up in prayers and my other sister and myself as we come together to somehow comfort her and get through each moment banded together."

After Megan was rescued, Turner said she and a third sister, Heather, ignored travel advisories to retrieve her in Asheville.

"It will be a long road for Megan. One in which will also be hard for Heather and me but we are just taking one day at a time," Turner wrote on Facebook.

The family has started a Gofundme to support Megan following the loss of her son, which has raised more than $10,000 past its fundraising goal of $120,000.
