The Antiville bonfire is tonight being pulled down in the wake of a tragedy that claimed the life of John Steele.
Heavy machinery moved in earlier on Sunday to dismantle the Larne pyre following consultation between the local community and Mid and East Antrim Council.
An MEA source told Belfast Live that “following last night’s tragedy in Larne, the community has requested that Council assist with the removal of bonfire material from the site today”.

The source added: “Contractors have been employed to carry out this work on behalf of Council. Council regularly works with the relevant statutory stakeholders and the community in relation to bonfires.
“The PSNI is leading the investigation following last night’s incident and Council is assisting as required.”
Later on Sunday night, the remains of the bonfire was set alight during a vigil held in Mr Steele's memory
Also this evening, the Antiville community started a JustGiving page to help the father-of-two’s family.
In a Facebook post, they said: “We have a link to a justgiving page to help the Steele family through this tough time. We would appreciate any donation no matter how small you may think it is it will go a very long way.
“Let’s see the community spirit we are known for especially for one of our own. Thank you everyone.”
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Noel Williams, expressed his “deep sympathy” and extended his condolences following the death.
The Mayor said: “The loss of a young man’s life in an accident at a bonfire site in Larne is shocking and my thoughts are with his heartbroken loved ones.
“The community is hurting and my prayers are with everybody impacted by this awful tragedy.”
Deputy Mayor Councillor Beth Adger MBE said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragedy in Larne last night.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the man who has lost his life. I thank the emergency services for their efforts at the scene.
“This loss has devastated the local community and they will have our love and support in the hours, days and weeks ahead.”
