Large queues for passports as holidaymakers warned they could face '10 week waits' for new documents

There were long queues in Liverpool today as people from across the country arrived to get new passports.

Waiting times for a new passport have risen from five to 10 weeks as Brits rush to renew them ahead of the summer holidays. The delays, which have hit five million Britons nationwide, threaten to throw the holiday plans of families, students and young couples into disarray.

Those urgently in need of a new passport can make an appointment to visit their local office to have one issued. There are just seven Passport Customer Service Centres dotted around the UK, one of which is based in Liverpool.
