Large oil spill and person trapped on M56 after multiple car crash

Two lanes on the M56 have been closed after a crash involving two lorries caused an oil spill on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to the motorway following reports a person became trapped. Lanes one and two remain closed while emergency services remain at the scene, resulting in delays for motorists.

The crash occurred between J10 and J9 near Warrington just after 9am. Motorists have been advised to allow extra time for their journey with delays expected in the area..

A statement from Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: "A road traffic collision involving two heavy goods vehicles on the M56, with one person trapped, saw firefighters attend. One arrival the person was out of the vehicle and was handed to the care of paramedics. Lanes one and two were closed while the incident was dealt with. An air ambulance also attended."

One fire engine from Lymm, one from Warrington and one from Runcorn attended. National Highways North West took to Twitter to warn motorists of the incident as "delays are building".

According to Traffic monitoring software Inrix, the M56 Eastbound entry slip road is as well as to of three lanes due to the accident and oil spillage from J10 A49 Tarporley Road (Stretton) to J9 M6 J20 ( Lymm Interchange).
