A large blaze has broken out in a roof spanning four terraced homes in Crayford, southeast London.

Around 60 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade are battling the blaze on Crayford Way, near Dartford, using a water tower.

Nearby residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut as large plumes of smoke fill the air.

“The roof spanning across four terraced houses is completely alight,” said Station Commander David Reed.

“One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders is being used as a water tower at the scene to get water on the building externally.

“Crayford Way is closed between Thames Road and Mill Place whilst crews work to make the scene safe and people are urged to avoid the area due to heavy congestion.

“We know it’s a warm day, but the fire is producing a lot of smoke in the local area, so we’re advising residents to keep their windows and doors closed.”

There are no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

The brigade received 10 calls about the blaze. Firefighters were first called to the scene just before 5.30pm.

Crews from Plumstead, Deptford, Eltham, Lee Green and surrounding fire stations are still responding.
