A dad who glassed another man in a social club has been ordered to pay him £1000 compensation.
Christopher Vale’s victim suffered cuts to the face and has been left with scars, Hamilton Sheriff Court was told.
Vale, 33, of Grayling Road, New Stevenston, admitted assaulting the man to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement at The Club, High Street, Newarthill, on November 6.
Aga Mathieson, prosecuting, said the men had been chatting but eventually the victim asked Vale to leave him alone.
The fiscal stated: “The accused then took a glass tumbler and hit him on the left side of the face, causing lacerations to his cheek and eyebrow that have left scars.”
Vale, who had been drinking and taking cocaine, claimed he lashed out because of a comment made by the other man.
But defence agent Ross Yuill admitted: “His reaction went well beyond what anyone would expect and he apologises.”
The dad of two has a previous conviction for a similar crime, but that was 10 years ago.
Mr Yuill told the court: “He’s in a different place now, with full time employment and a family. He is not someone who offends on a regular basis.
“He self-referred to an alcohol and drugs programme and his attendance there is described as excellent.”
Passing sentence, Sheriff Colin Dunipace told Vale: “You accepted your culpability at an early stage and saved the complainer the ordeal of giving evidence.
“I’m just persuaded that I can stand back from custody in this case.”
Vale will be under supervision for 18 months and must attend addiction counselling and carry out 240 hours of unpaid community work.
He will be confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day under a six-month electronic tagging order.
The sheriff warned him: “If you breach any of these orders in any way you will be brought back before me and I have in mind a sentence of approximately 18 months.”
