Lanarkshire slimmers scale back their clothes for a good cause

Lanarkshire locals have shown the weigh to go - by slimming down their wardrobes for a good cause.

Members of Slimming World groups in Rutherglen and Cambuslang have shed hundreds of clothes and donated them to Cancer Research UK shops as part of the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw campaign,

The initiative sees group members encouraged to donate clothes they will no longer need to the store.

When it was last held in 2019 the nationwide effort raised £3.2million for Cancer Research UK and €320,000 for the Irish Cancer Society, before the coronavirus pandemic meant it could not be held for two years.

However members of the Rutherglen and Cambuslang groups were quick off the mark with the event resuming this year.

Linda Parrott, who runs groups in Halfway, told Lanarkshire Live: "Slimming World has supported Cancer Research UK since 2013 and has helped to raise more than £17 million for its work to create a world where everyone can live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.

"When I mentioned to my members about the upcoming event they were all very happy to fill a bag with clothes they have slimmed out of."

Emma Johnston, who runs groups in Rutherglen, added that she was excited to take part in her first Clothes Throw as she became a consultant just before the lockdown in 2020.

She added: "We are so proud of our members as we managed to collect 100 bags for this great cause."

The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw 2022 gives members a chance to celebrate the difference that they’ve made to their health and the reduced risk of a range of health conditions including cancer, whether they’ve dropped one dress or waist size, or six.

The slimming group have also stressed the many benefits of losing weight, as being overweight has been shown to increase the risk of developing cancer

Your exact risk will depend on lots of factors, including things you can’t change such as your age, but losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight could prevent around 22,800 cases of cancer every year in the UK, and reduce the risk of 13 types of cancer such as cancers of the breast, uterus, ovaries and gall bladder.

Linda runs her group every Tuesday at 4pm, 5.30pm and 7pm and on Wednesdays at 9.30am and 11am in The Sun Inn function suite on Lightburn Road.

Emma runs her groups every Thursday at 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7pm and on Fridays at 9.30am in the 100 Acres function suite on Curtis Avenue.
