Lanarkshire residents left sickened after sewage flows onto street

Lanarkshire residents have been left feeling sick after raw sewage flooded onto their street.

Locals living near Dalmarnock Road in Rutherglen say the stench and mess has worsened in recent weeks, and have called for a long term fix to the problem.

However although Scottish Water insist they are investigating a solution, they could not provide a time scale for when improvements could be made.

The problem is reportedly at its worst around the bus stop across from the Arnold Clark store on the street, and tends to occur when there is heavy rainfall.

One resident told Lanarkshire Live about the disgusting smell.

They said: "There was an issue on the road about three years ago which was fixed.

"The same problem started about four weeks ago - there are access points at the bus stop beside Arnold Clark, and outside what was the Old Mill pub.

"The bus stop is worse as it spills onto the road and around the bus shelter, and you can imagine what happens when a bus hits the puddle.

"I don't use that stop, but you can smell the sewage at both places."

Lanarkshire Live understands that the work required to solve the problem could take time due to the complex nature of the problem.

A Scottish Water spokesman told us: “We are aware of an issue at this location and our investigations are continuing to establish how best to rectify it.

"It is likely that this issue will be incorporated into a wider programme of future investment which will tackle ageing infrastructure in the area."
