A planned new Wishaw nursery is again experiencing lengthy delays.
The proposed Heathery Park Family Learning Centre in Wishawhill was initially meant to be built by July, but this was then changed to October.
Last month’s target completion date was also missed and this has been attributed to workforce shortages with not enough tradespeople available to complete the construction project.
Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor Nathan Wilson admits the delays after frustrating particularly as Heathery Park is the final brand new nursery due to be completed out of nine by North Lanarkshire Council.
Councillor Wilson, who spoke out on the issue at a recent NLC Education Committee, said: “The most recent challenges to impact on the planned new build nursery in Wishawhill has effectively put the project into limbo and subject to unspecified further delays.
“As part of the 1140 Childcare Expansion initiative, the council is establishing nine new nurseries and the eighth centre to be ready at Forgewood was complete in November 2021.
“The Heathery Park Family Learning Centre will now not be delivered until considerably more than a year after the second last nursery in the programme was completed in a best-case scenario and this is a major point of frustration.
“Local families in Wishawhill deserve no less than to have the much-promised new nursery delivered and it is important that substantive progress in getting the project back on track can be made by the time of the next Education Committee meeting if not before.”
