Lanarkshire MSP supports Humanitarian Appeal for Ukraine

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has shown her support for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).

Their Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is raising funds to respond to the crisis and supply people with shelter, food and water as well as medical support.

Over one million people have already fled their homes - leaving behind jobs, belongings and loved ones.

DEC charities and their local partners are inside and outside Ukraine, after having mobilised immediately to help people on the ground.

Thousands of people across Scotland have donated to the appeal since it opened last Thursday – with funds raised totalling over £10 million.

Ms Haughey is calling on locals to donate to the DEC Humanitarian Appeal if they are in a position to do so.

She told Lanarkshire Live: “We have all watched in horror as Russia’s aggression has led to deplorable loss of Ukrainian lives, livelihoods and of homes.

“I know that many people want to do what they can to support those affected by Putin’s war, and the Disasters Emergency Committee’s appeal is the fastest and most efficient way to support those on the ground.

“I have donated to the DEC Appeal in Scotland, and I am encouraging all those who can spare some money to do so too.”

In addition to the work of the DEC appeal, the action taken locally to support the people of Ukraine has been extraordinary with residents, local businesses, and third sector organisations getting involved to help.

Ms Haughey added: “The response across Cambuslang and Rutherglen has been heart-warming – with communities pulling together to provide immediate practical and financial assistance to the people of Ukraine.

“Dickson Chemist, members of our local Polish community, the Nurture Society and Rain or Shine South Lanarkshire are just a few groups that I am aware of who have been doing incredible work – getting support to those who need it.

“Rutherglen and Cambuslang stand in solidarity with the democracies worldwide in supporting Ukraine.”

Donations to the DEC appeal can be made online or by calling 0370 60 60 900, or texting SUPPORT to 70150 to donate £10. Texts cost £10 and the whole £10 goes to the DEC UKRAINE HUMANITARIAN APPEAL. You must be 16 or over and please ask the bill payer's permission.
