Lanarkshire MSP says Chancellors measures to help with rising energy costs 'barely scratch surface'

A survey by a comparison website has revealed that residents in South Lanarkshire are paying nearly a third more than the energy price cap set to be introduced in October.

Households in South Lanarkshire are paying on average £1684 per year, according to latest figures from Compare the Market.

Out of 408 local authorities in Britain, South Lanarkshire ranked as the 78th most expensive.

Residents in South Lanarkshire are already paying 31.9 per cent more than the price cap that is set to be introduced this year.

And the data also shows that people across Scotland are paying more on their bills than compared to England and Wales.

East Kilbride MSP Collette Stevenson (ALICEALVES)

East Kilbride MSP, Collette Stevenson, has said measures introduced by the Chancellor last month don't go far enough to tackle rising fuel bills faced by her constituents.

She told Lanarkshire Live : "People across Scotland, including in South Lanarkshire are paying the price for sky high energy bills, despite Scotland having an abundance of resources in oil and gas and renewables.

"Under Westminster control, the vast revenue from Scotland's oil and gas industry has been squandered by UK governments for decades and now it is consumers in East Kilbride and across Lanarkshire who are getting hammered with higher average energy bills.

"The measures announced by the Chancellor last month – welcome though they were - will barely scratch the surface of the rocketing energy bills crippling households now and in the winter months to come.

"High fuel bills in East Kilbride and across Scotland lies squarely at the door of the Westminster government."

Graham Simpson MSP (Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser)

Tory MSP Graham Simpson said pressures from around the world were having a "huge impact" on energy bill costs.

He told us : “I fully appreciate how hard times are for many families across South Lanarkshire and I am always here to assist anyone who needs support.

“However, this is a typical attack from the SNP, which only gives a passing mention to the widespread support the UK Government have provided to help people through the cost-of-living crisis.

“The Chancellor’s targeted support will rightly help the most vulnerable people and ease the pressure of rising energy bills."
