A new law ensuring that the health and educational needs of those affected by Down Syndrome are protected was backed by East Kilbride's MP.
Over the past year Dr Lisa Cameron has been chairwoman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Down Syndrome, a group set up to campaign for equal access and to ensure equality and promote respect at all stages of life for people with the condition.
Since the group’s inception, it has raised issues affecting people with Down Syndrome including their families and carers campaigning for equal access and support in all areas of life, and highlighting the innate worth of people with the condition and the unique contribution they make to our society.
It was decided at the first meeting that to meet the needs of the Down Syndrome community across the UK that the group needed to create a Down Syndrome Bill to ensure that the health and educational needs of those affected by the condition were protected.
The Down Syndrome Bill last week overcame its final hurdle in parliament and was enshrined into law.
Dr Cameron told Lanarkshire Live : “I was really pleased to co-sign the Private Members Bill taken forward on this issue by Liam Fox MP who came out near the top of the Ballot for Private Members Bills and to represent the SNP on the Down Syndrome Bill Committee.
"This is so timely, on the week of World Down Syndrome Day and I have also lodged an Early Day Motion into parliament to mark its importance.
"Cross-party working can be difficult in parliament due to political differences, but it is so very heartening to see MPs across parties come together to support and herald the Down Syndrome Bill.”
