A memorial honouring miners who lost their lives at work was spray-painted in the aftermath of a popular Lanarkshire gala day.
And the local authority have said such incidents were "inevitable".
Fed up residents in Cambuslang have expressed frustration after the Main Street and surrounding roads in the town were left in a mess after last week's Summerfest event.
The local bash was returning for the first time since 2019, but organisers were among those left exasperated by the amount of graffiti, silly string and dye residue left behind.
Among the vandalised items was the memorial on Hamilton Road, which had the Irish tricolour painted over it.
South Lanarkshire Council's executive director of community and enterprise resources, David Booth, said: “Every year our gala days attract large crowds.
"Our street cleansing teams are always on hand to remove any problem waste that is inevitable following these enjoyable events."
Local resident Ronnie McLure described the disruption to Lanarkshire Live as "terrible".
He told us : "The stonework and the seats on the Main Street was sprayed with silly string and graffiti, and it's the residue that's causing the problem - the dye is left behind on the Main Street and they've literally just spent hundreds of thousands of pounds doing the street up.
"It's got so bad that we should cancel Summerfest if this keeps happening. It happens every year and local shops there just sell the stuff to kids.
"I've said to them about it and they say they have a right to do so, but there's morally a right to the community there as well."
A second local resident who spoke with us said: "It's a disgrace what happened to the monument. These are stupid kids who have no idea what they are doing and have no respect for what the monument represents."
Summerfest organisers told Lanarkshire Live they were dismayed to see silly string and spray paint being sold on the day.
John Edgar of the Summerfest committee told us : "We have raised this with shops before, but one in particular continues to sell these items. There is not much more we can do regarding it."
