Lanarkshire man jailed after assaulting pal in row over money in the street

A man who attacked his pal after a row over money has been jailed for 20 months.

Jamie Jones had accused the man of stealing cash from him while he was sleeping.

Jones was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

The 33-year-old admitted assaulting his friend in Albert Terrace, Hamilton, on October 8 last year.

The court heard that the victim has since passed away, though there was no suggestion of any link to the attack.

Alice Carey, prosecuting, said the man and his sister arrived at a block of flats in a taxi around 4pm.

He was confronted by Jones who had emerged from the block.

Ms Carey told the court that the victim began to run away but fell.

She added: "Jones stood over him and punched him to the side of the face, telling him to get his money out.

"He got to his feet and an argument ensued regarding money, with Jones punching him again and slapping him."

The court heard that Jones told his victim: "That's what you get if you try to bump me", and punched him a third time before going back into the flats.

The victim suffered redness to his face but did not require treatment.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said the two friends and another man had been drinking earlier.

Jones fell asleep and woke up to find money missing.

Jones was the subject of eight separate bail orders at the time of the assault.

Sheriff Thomas Millar told him: "Having regard to your record, custody is inevitable."

However, the 20-month sentence was backdated as Jones has been in prison since his arrest in October.
