Lanarkshire health care heroes named as finalists in prestigious awards

Two Lanarkshire health and social care heroes are up for top awards for their dedication to help people in their communities.

The local pair were named finalists in the prestigious Scottish Health Awards 2022, along with two teams from NHS Lanarkshire.

The awards celebrate the NHS staff, support workers, volunteers and specialist teams who go above and beyond to provide exceptional care and support to patients and their families.

Every year Scotland’s healthcare heroes help thousands of people in need and never more so than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The dedicated professionals from NHS Lanarkshire were selected from over 750 nominations.

Jimmy Grieve, 86, is being recognised as a Volunteers Award finalist.

He was instrumental in designing and developing the memorial garden and rainbow ‘thank you’ sign at the entrance of Wishaw General, providing a fitting tribute to the incredible dedication of the healthcare team.

Carol Rattray, project coordinator for Lanarkshire’s condom distribution schemes, is also a finalist and is up for the going in the People’s Choice category, specially created to recognise the extraordinary work of NHS Scotland staff, social care staff and carers in responding to the pandemic.

Carol recognised that the pandemic would only serve to increase pre-existing inequalities in the ability to access contraception and worked with organisations like food banks and meal delivery services to combat this as well as setting up the now permanent postal order service.

The Lanarkshire Care Home Wellbeing Group was established during the pandemic to support care home workers in dealing with its impact.

The group has now been made permanent and its team are shortlisted in the Care for Mental Health category for their positive influence.

South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership’s Home First approach sees multi-disciplinary teams working together to provide people with care at home where possible, preventing avoidable admissions to hospital, and helping secure quick discharges.

This approach has seen it teams recognised in the Integrated Care Award category.

Patients, families, work colleagues and members of the public were invited to nominate dedicated health and social care workers for one of 16 categories.

David Dick, editor in chief of Daily Record and Sunday Mail, said: “The Scottish Health Awards finalists reflect the amazing diversity of talent and showcase the dedication and commitment of the people who work tirelessly on our behalf.

"The judging panel had a challenging task with over 750 deserving nominations to review.

"Every one of our finalists should be very proud of the work they have delivered and the difference they have made to their patients, patients’ families and communities.”

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at the O2 Academy, Edinburgh on November 3.
