Lanarkshire food bank 'busier than ever' as charity forced to appeal for donations

A Lanarkshire food bank has told how they are "busier than ever" as they appealed for donations during the cost of living crisis.

Volunteers at the Rutherglen and Cambuslang food bank are searching for a number of items they are currently running low on, and are asking locals if they can help out.

The charity was recently helped out by coffee giant Starbucks, as staff at the chain's Rutherglen branch on Dalmarnock Road held a quiz night to raise both cash and supplies.

However even with support like that, the food bank is still needing support.

Katharina Nimmo, the manager of the food bank, told Lanarkshire Live : "We’re busier than ever at the moment with the cost of living starting to bite for people.

"We’re relying on donations to be able to keep up our service to the community of supporting those in crisis more than ever. People can donate in Morrisons in Cambuslang, Tesco in Dalmarnock Rd and in Halfway and the Coop in Rutherglen.

"At the moment we’re particularly short of a number of items".

The items most needed are UHT milk (full fat or semi skimmed), tinned fish, tins or jars of meat, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, tinned soup, rice pudding, custard, biscuits, diluting juice and small jars of coffee.

Earlier this year we told how the food bank had seen demand shoot up throughout 2021 and into 2022, with fears that numbers would continue to increase due to energy bills soaring.

However Katharina added that she would be grateful for support from the likes of Starbucks.

The quiz night that staff held raised a total of £415, with £300 in cash given to the food bank and the remainder used by Starbucks staff to buy items that they then donated to the food bank.

Katharina said: "It was a quiz night with a raffle and everyone had a really great time. Some of our trustees and volunteers went, and one of them even won the quiz.

"We'd like to thank Ryan at Starbucks for organising it and the staff there for helping."
