Lanarkshire drivers contend with long delays after lorry breaks down

Drivers in one part of Lanarkshire experienced huge delays this morning thanks to a broken down lorry.

Those travelling on the A71 near Stonehouse, near to the Canderside Toll junction of the M74, were made to wait for over an hour to get through a part of the road which should take less than five minutes.

One commuter wrote on social media: “Took me over an hour to get out of Stonehouse!”

Another said: “Lorry has managed to move so it’s not blocking too much. Police are guiding you through.”

And one woman added: “Still slow getting through so add extra time for your journey.”

Police confirmed that the lorry has now been removed.

A force spokeswoman told us: “We received a report a lorry had broken down on the A71 near Stonehouse around 5.20am this morning (December 13).

“The lorry has been removed and the roadway is open.”
