A lift for residents at a Muirhouse tower block is to remain out of operation for almost one year as upgrades take place.
The lift used for odd numbered flats at Lodge Tower was removed from service on October 19 2021, and was supposed to be available again in mid-February 2022.
However, through enquiries made by Councillor Nathan Wilson, it has been revealed that the installation works for the new odd lift are not expected to be complete until September 1 2022.
The council have said that one of the reasons for the near five-month delay is because the contractor for the project has experienced problems with the supply of materials impacting the wider construction sector.
They also said that difficulties with the retention of subcontracted workers has delayed the building programme.
Conservative councillor for Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig, Nathan Wilson, said: “In the past year and a half, there have been major issues with the lifts at tower blocks in Muirhouse remaining out of operation for an incredibly long period and Lodge is an addition to this list.
“It is incredibly worrying that the lift for residents in odd numbered properties is expected to be out of action for almost one year and shockingly, this now seems to be the best-case scenario.
“I understand the odd lift remaining out of action for nine months to date has caused real practical challenges for individuals who are elderly and vulnerable as residents now need to navigate a flight of stairs to reach the even lift when leaving the tower for day-to-day activities.
“There has to be a concerted focus from the council to stop any further slippage with the target completion timetable and to bring the lift safely back into operation.
“On a more positive note, it is welcome that the project to return the even lifts at Merryton, Dalziel, Shields and Grange towers to service concluded in a much shorter period than the works to install new odd lifts in each of the buildings albeit the reality there was still a delay is disappointing.”
