A Lanarkshire community group has been given a boost to its outdoor project thanks to a donation from a local supermarket.
Burnhill Action Group in Rutherglen is currently developing an outdoor hub that will serve as a meeting place that can host coffee mornings, arts and craft sessions and other local activities.
The Asda store in nearby Toryglen has now chipped in a whopping £7000 to the good cause as part of a nationwide investment by the Asda foundation into community projects across the country.
Elizabeth Arbuckle, community champion Asda Toryglen, said: "I was so delighted to surprise Burnhill Action Group with a cheque for £7000 from the Asda Foundation.
"Burnhill Action Group is an amazing local project that acts as a positive voice for the Burnhill neighbourhood, working together to improve the area for the benefit of all their residents.”
"They also encourage the wider community to get involved, working to develop the goodwill and involvement of the residents through the development of activities and events.
"They are really deserving of this grant and I’m so pleased I’ve been able to secure this vital funding to create a better outdoor space for these residents to enjoy.”
Elizabeth McDonald, a volunteer at Burnhill Action Group, was delighted at the donation.
She said: "We are all absolutely buzzing to have received this grant – we had hoped to get something but the £7000 is a really amazing amount of money for us.
"By investing in local communities like this, the Asda Foundation is allowing us to make a real difference to the area – we really are so grateful and also thankful for the support we receive from Liz."
"The grant will allow us not only to create a community centre of our own but also to get our community garden going and offer coffee mornings and craft sessions throughout the year for local residents.
Over 60 ‘Spaces and Places’ grants ranging from £5,000 to £25,000, have been awarded across the UK by the Asda Foundation with Burnhill Action Group one of the successful applications to receive funding.
