Lanarkshire college student nominated for prestigious award

An East Kilbride college student has been shortlisted for a top award.

James Carr is in the running for the Foundation Apprentice Student of the Year gong at the 2022 Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.

He was nominated for the award by his South Lanarkshire College lecturer, Julie McGrane.

The online ceremony will be held during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which runs from March 7 -11.

James from, Blantyre, told Lanarkshire Live : “I am delighted that Julie has nominated me as it was a big leap for me to undertake the course.

“Following my business management higher, I felt I wanted to progress my knowledge and understanding of the subject away from the school classroom. I knew I didn’t want to leave school, I just wanted to broaden my horizons.

"I really wanted to give this part-time college course a go. I knew it would give an understanding of the work environment, as well as an insight into what employers expect of their staff."

James’ lecturer, Julie McGrane, said: she nominated him because of his excellent work ethic and kind nature.

She told us: "Throughout the course, James tackled every task with enthusiasm and dedication, often out with normal study hours.

"He consistently demonstrated attention to detail, clear planning and accurate business awareness.

"James undertook the work placement element of the FA with South Lanarkshire Council, where he hosted most of the project meetings with the Council election team, preparing and delivering on a marketing strategy to encourage the 16-18 age group to vote.

"He was responsible for creating an Instagram advert, recording voice-overs, posters and managing the market research elements of the project."

Foundation Apprenticeships are delivered successfully in South Lanarkshire through a partnership between South Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire College.

James, encouraged by his college experience, has now enrolled on an HNC course in legal studies at South Lanarkshire College.
