Lanarkshire care home enjoys summer fun during heatwave

Residents at a Lanarkshire care home took advantage of the recent good weather to enjoy some fun in the sun.

As temperatures soared during July, staff at Rutherglen Care Home helped organise a number of activities to take advantage of the heat, including a seaside themed series of events.

They also spent time reminiscing with residents about past summer holidays abroad and day trips to Saltcoats, Troon and Largs.

Maureen Thomson, the Activity Coordinator at the care home, told Lanarkshire Live : "We love to get everyone outside any excuse we get but we're usually wrapped up for the elements.

"So this good weather has been well appreciated and we've certainly made the most of it."

Maureen's team organised picnics in the gardens with ice cold drinks, paddling pools and beach hats, real life postcards and seaside themed picture boards.

They also visited every single resident in the Home offering treats from their homemade ice-cream cart.

Maureen added: "We've had a lot of fun talking about the old days and bringing back cherished memories.

"Whilst we were eating our sandwiches we were laughing about how sandwiches at the beach used to have an extra crunch from the sand.

"We were also very lucky to be able to read and look at real life postcards which were sent to our residents from an initiative called Postcards of Kindness that asks people to write postcards to residents in care homes.

"It sounds like a small gesture but it brings a great deal of joy and sparks lively conversations."

Care home resident Margaret Brown, 88, was getting a visit from family during one of the picnics and her great granddaughter, Ava, was delighted to be able to dip her feet into a paddling pool to cool down at the same time.

Michael Mitchell, 81, was up for a laugh and got his picture taken in the photo-board while his friend and fellow resident John Bain cracked jokes.

Other happy residents took shade from the sun with their hats, including Winnie McNicol, 85, George Coutts, 82 and Mary McLaughlin, 85.
