Lanarkshire bank project nominated for community award

A community banking hub in Lanarkshire has been nominated for an award.

The Cambuslang BankHub is in the running for a Scotland Loves Local prize in the Enterprising Communities category, having been nominated with two other community projects in Dumfries and Ayrshire.

The winner will be announced at the Scotland’s Towns Conference at CentreStage in Kilmarnock on Wednesday, November 16.

The BankHub project, which sees banking facilities available through the post office on Cambuslang Main Street, came after years of campaigning by the area's community council regarding a lack of local banking facilities in the town.

All the area's banks had closed in quick succession several years previously, leading to concerns about access to cash and the impact on the most vulnerable people in the area.

The hub was set up by the Access to Cash Action Group as a pilot project and since opening in 2021 has proved a success.

Cambuslang Community Council's chair John Bachtler told Lanarkshire Live : "We're delighted to have been shortlisted for the Cambuslang BankHUB in the Enterprising Communities category.

"The Scotland Loves Local awards are intended to celebrate people, places and projects that are making a difference to local communities.

"We have a great community with so many people who are working hard to improve Cambuslang, and I'm proud that the dedicated members of Cambuslang Community Council are getting recognition through these awards.

"It's tremendous that Cambuslang has been able to pioneer a new form of banking hub that is now being copied in many other towns across Scotland and the rest of the UK.

"We know how successful the BankHUB has been and that it it is valued by local residents and businesses. We can see its importance in the number of customers and turnover, which are still increasing.

"Our BankHUB is up against stiff competition as there are many great community projects in the running - but we're keeping our fingers crossed for the announcement of the winners."

The awards are organised by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP) as part of the Scotland Loves Local campaign, which encourages everyone to support local businesses.

STP Chief Officer Phil Prentice said: “From tackling the climate emergency, embracing enterprise and creativity to creating great places to live, work and visit, our shortlisted entries proudly fly the flag for the dedication and innovation which make our communities great.

"I can’t wait to hear more about the difference they make. My thanks also to our sponsors for making these awards possible."
