Lainey Wilson embraces one of this year's hottest decor trends with her moody fireplace

It's no secret that dark paint is having a moment right now. From moody black kitchens to sensual slate gray bedrooms, darker hues are on the rise, proving to be as versatile as they are bold. They're especially good shades to use for those who love a neutral but want a change from the classic cream or greige.

Grammy-award-winning musician Lainey Wilson is the latest star to partake in the trend – the singer posted a photo of her Nashville-based home's fireplace (the 7th photo on the carousel below), straying away from the traditional brick-red and instead covered in a near-black paint.

Decking out a fireplace in black is certainly a bold choice, but this style fits in well with any simple yet chic existing design scheme.

'Black painted fireplaces represent modern minimalism, creating an elegant dichotomy in any area,' says Artem Kropovinsky, Interior Designer at Arsight. 'To decorate around them, opt for light or neutral tones, giving the fireplace the opportunity to be a focal point.'

Black is an inherently strong color, so balancing with lighter decals and soft or warm textures can help bring some levity to a space. We love Lainey's playful take on her fireplace decor of two identical gold cheetah statues.

'Softening of harshness is attained when natural materials such as wood or stone are introduced, thereby adding warmth and depth,' Artem suggests. 'Choose delicate metallic accents or monochromatic art to go with the fireplace statement without dominating.'

Artem also says that green and black are a dynamic duo, bringing a burst of nature to a bold room using house plants and

'The greenery can bring in a new, living element, thus softening the very strong visual aspect of the fireplace,' Artem explains.

Got big windows? Keep the curtains open, as according to Artem, another form of contrast to a black fireplace can be natural light.

'Employ strategic lighting to highlight architectural elements and increase the presence of the fireplace,' he says.
