Labour will the first party to launch its campaign for the upcoming Stretford and Urmston by-election, to be held on December 15. Following the resignation of MP Kate Green, local Councillor Andrew Western has been selected as Labour’s candidate.
On Saturday he will be welcoming Labour's Deputy Leader Angela Rayner to Stretford Public Hall for a short campaign rally and door-knocking. Coun Western, the current Trafford council leader, is looking to put household finances at the centre of Labour’s campaign to hold the seat.
Speaking ahead of the launch, he said: “The legacy of the Conservatives is an economic black hole, with more and more households being sucked into the depths of financial chaos. I live here in Stretford and Urmston and I am utterly furious about how this Government have behaved.

“Stretford and Urmston are brilliant places to live. Our communities are hard working, ambitious and proud. We deserve so much better than this rabble of out-of-touch egotists in charge.
“As your MP, I will be the voice for anyone worried about the spiralling cost of everyday life. I am the candidate that can send a message to Rishi Sunak- don’t make working people pay for your party’s mismanagement of our economy.”
Commenting on the launch Ms Rayner said: "It is a real pleasure to help Andrew launch his campaign. He is a candidate with a record of delivery unlike anyone else- the local and trusted candidate. I cannot wait to see what he achieves in Parliament.”
Ms Green formally resigned last Thursday , setting up a by-election in the constituency she held with a majority of more than 16,000 at the last General Election. She was announced as Andy Burnham's preferred choice for the role of the deputy major of Greater Manchester, replacing Baroness Bev Hughes who announced last Wednesday she would be stepping down in the new year after five years in the post.
