Labour MP loses whip after video appears to show him punching man

A LABOUR MP has lost the party whip after a video emerged appearing to show him punching a man to the ground.

The party said Mike Amesbury, the MP for Runcorn and Helsby, had been suspended “pending an investigation” into the incident.

It comes after fresh footage obtained by the Mail Online appeared to show the MP (pictured below) standing repeatedly hitting another man as others nearby shout “stop it”.

We previously told how footage circulated online appearing to show Amesbury berating a man who was lying on the road before a bystander pushed him away.

He could be heard saying: "You won't threaten the MP for Runcorn again, will you?"

On Saturday evening, Cheshire Police confirmed they were investigating the incident.

At the time, Amesbury said he was “determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community” and would “co-operate with any inquiries” officers have about the apparent altercation.

Now, a spokesperson for the Labour Party has confirmed Amesbury has had the whip removed.

They said: “Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries following an incident on Friday night.

“As these inquiries are now ongoing, the Labour Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labour Party pending an investigation.”
